(CNN) — Scott Perry, Republican representative from Pennsylvaniasaid Tuesday that the FBI seized his cell phone.

“This morning, while traveling with my family, 3 FBI agents visited me and seized my cell phone,” he said in a statement.

The seizure is related to an investigation being conducted in part by the Justice Department’s inspector general, according to a person familiar with the matter.

While Scott Perry did not detail exactly why his cellphone was seized, the watchdog is also investigating the actions of former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, and possibly others, as it assesses the department’s role in seeking to help former President Donald Trump. to block the certification of the election results in 2020.

Spokesmen for the Justice Department and the inspector general declined to comment.

Perry is closely related to Clark, who has come under scrutiny from federal investigators for his role in efforts to nullify the 2020 election. Law enforcement agents searched his home earlier this summer.

The search warrant against Perry noted that the inspector general’s lab in northern Virginia could conduct a forensic examination of the seized phone. The inclusion of the inspector general is unusual, given that his office investigates wrongdoing by Justice Department employees. Perry, a five-term congressman, has never worked for that department.

The inspector general’s office is the same division of the Justice Department listed as responsible for forensic analysis and other investigative work following the searches of Clark and former Trump attorney John Eastman in June.

The new details come as Perry and other Republicans have criticized federal law enforcement agencies for recording a sitting congressman’s communications that, if related to his legislative work, may be protected by the Constitution.

However, authorities took precautions Tuesday not to access Perry’s information that should be protected, the source said. A copy of Scott Perry’s phone was taken after the search and returned to him shortly after. The order indicated that the federal authorities would have to return to the federal court to obtain a second authorization that would allow them to access the contents, according to the source.

Eastman, Clark and Perry have not been charged with any crime. It is not clear if there is a purpose of the criminal investigation into the political contacts that helped Trump’s pressure campaign after the elections, but the inspector general of the Department of Justice investigates the irregularities of the employees within that agency, of the that Clark was a party to at the time Trump tried to recruit him to push false claims of voter fraud. Perry introduced Clark and Trump.

Other Washington-based prosecutors at the Justice Department are working on the criminal investigation related to Clark and Eastman, along with the inspector general’s office, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
