The National Basketball Association suspended Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver for one year and fined him $10 million for having “violated common workplace standards,” the league announced Tuesday.

The league says the sanctions follow an independent investigation that found Sarver had used a racial slur on at least five occasions “when recounting the statements of others,” including four instances between 2012 and 2017 after an earlier incident during recruitment of a free agent, after which he had been told he shouldn’t use the word even in repetition.
