Popularised by the famous Hollywood franchise movie “Back to the Future”, the iconic DeLorean badge is back and this time with a new 2+2 electric sports car. The fourth model in the Alpha range, the Alpha5 is expected to hit production in 2024. DeLorean also revives the Alpha badge that was trademarked in the 1980s and has three more concept models over the years.
DeLorean Motor Reimagined, a new iteration of DMC that has no relation to DeLorean Classic, has unveiled its latest Alpha5 electric sportscar at the 71st Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, on the occasion of its nominal company’s 40-year anniversary.
The new stylish coupe is an extension of DeLorean’s iconic badge, Alpha which was trademarked in the early 80s. The range comprises the Alpha2 ICE concept, Alpha3 EV concept and the AlphaIV Hydrogen Fuel Cell concept.
All three concept cars were showcased at the event too, alongside. However, unlike these three concept vehicles, the Alpha5 is expected to hit production in 2024, although nothing is confirmed as of yet.
The Alpha5 is a full electric 2+2 vehicle. It can accelerate from 0-96 km/h in 2.99 seconds on its way to an electronically -limited top speed of 155 mph (converts to 250 km/h.). These spectacular numbers come from a 100 kWh battery that is good for an estimated range of 482 km on a single charge.
To juice up the battery, the Alpha5 is assumed will have fast-charging capacity along with household and 240-volt facilities as well. It’ll get an all-wheel-drivetrain, so it’ll probably feature two motors at least on both axles. It’ll also feature multi-mode adaptive suspension.
The body design of the Alpha5 takes a lot of inspiration from other Alpha cars and its famous predecessors, DMC-12 and DMC-24. For example, the bonnet design is inspired by the Alpha2 EV concept, the iconic large two gull-wing doors have passed down the generation right from the first DMC-12. The vehicle’s interior design is completely new and simple in outlook, with just two screens( for infotainment and instrumentation) and two knobs.
“As one of the premier events in the world, Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is an important steppingstone in the future of DeLorean Motors Reimagined, and we are grateful to be a part of this year’s event to showcase the Alpha5 and its predecessors,” added Troy Beetz, chief marketing officer of DeLorean Motors Reimagined.
The DeLorean Alpha5 will be competing with a growing number of high-performance electric vehicles when it launches in the US by 2024. Tesla is yet to launch its Roadster, which is a much-anticipated car for several years now since it was first unveiled in 2018.
As of now, the competition in performance electric vehicles (with electronically limited 155 mph top speed) against the upcoming DeLorean Alpha5 would include the Porsche Taycan or the Audi e-tron GT.
