Biden is “very well” after covid-19 infection, according to Fauci

(CNN) — Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stated Tuesday on CNN’s New Day that President Biden is doing “very well” as he recovers from the Covid-19 infection.

“I was talking to his doctor, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, last night,” Fauci said, when asked if there were any new updates on Biden’s status. “He’s completed his five days, now the decision is what are we going to do from here regarding further testing and how soon we can get him out.”

Fauci said he didn’t know if the president had tested negative but doubted it, saying it would be unusual for him to test negative so quickly.

“He’s doing great,” Fauci said. “In fact, every day he’s gotten better and better to the point where he feels really good now.”

Asked about long covid and the signs and symptoms people should look for, Fauci said there’s a constellation of them, but the most common ones are exhaustion after activities that wouldn’t normally exhaust someone, temperature dysregulation, such sometimes some sleep disorders and sometimes difficulty concentrating.

“What goes in the positive direction for the president is that he’s vaccinated, he was on two boosters, he had a good immune response, and he was on Paxlovid very, very early,” Fauci said.

What is Paxlovid, the antiviral that Biden is receiving? 0:48

“So the viral replication in him was suppressed very, very early on by Paxlovid. Hopefully, that will be something that puts him out of risk, there’s always a risk, and that’s what you’re looking for. unlikely with him due to the circumstances I just mentioned.”

Biden tested positive for coronavirus last week. As reported at the time, the US president had mild symptoms and was started on Paxlovid.

It is the first time Biden, 79, has tested positive for COVID-19. Biden received his first two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech covid-19 vaccine before his inauguration in January 2021, his first booster shot in September, and his second booster shot on March 30.
